Folk music enthusiast are familiar with the wonderful world of African-American “Fife and Drum” music from Mississippi, but very little know about the world of Congolese fife and drum music that I discovered on a trip up the Congo river. {note: I wish I could start off every post with “when I was traveling down the Congo river.”] Its an essential part of the Kimbanguist Church, a Central African religious movement founded by Simon Kimbangu under the Belgian Congo. His followers take “thou shall pay flutes” literally!
